Everyone, including companies, traders
and business, all produce waste. In fact, in England and Wales
the combination of industry, commerce and household waste
amounts to over 330 million tonnes annually (2002/3).
This is, regrettably, growing at around
3% every year. Because of its very nature, waste (often unwanted
or unneeded material) cannot be eliminated totally, we can
reduce its environmental impact by preventing waste wherever
possible, and making more sustainable use of the waste that
is produced by recycling.
The Government set out its plans for sustainable
waste management in Waste Strategy 2000 - they called it the
national waste strategy. Provisional figures show that in
2004/05 English households recycled more than a fifth of their
waste (approaching 23%) - one of the lowest rates in Europe
- and our target is to increase this to 25% by 2005/06. The
UK also committed to reducing the amount of biodegradable
municipal waste landfill, in accordance with European Directives.
Commercial and trade waste produced the
bulk of waste at about 300 million tonnes (2002/3). In 2002/3
disposal of commercial and industrial waste to landfill was
13 per cent lower than in 1998/9 and, for the first time,
recycling and reuse had overtaken landfill as the most common
method of waste management. Overall 44 per cent was sent to
landfill and 45 per cent recycled. Landfill charges have risen
significantly in recently years and authorities have been
advised from government to divert waste from landfill and
encourage recycling.
Recycle now
says: "Waste disposal costs can be up
to 5% of your companies' annual turnover, so more and more
businesses are finding it pays to look at sustainable ways
of dealing with waste."
